Overview
Firo is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that uses zero-knowledge proofs to allow users to destroy coins and then redeem them for brand new ones without leaving a trail of transactions. It developed the Lelantus privacy system, which allows users to burn their coins and then exchange them for fresh ones with no transaction history.
Prior to Lelantus, it was the first cryptocurrency to code and launch a practical implementation of the Zerocoin protocol, which went on to become one of the most widely used privacy protocols, before being replaced by Sigma and then Lelantus after cryptographic flaws in the Zerocoin protocol were discovered in 2019.

Firo has a PoW-Chainlock hybrid consensus mechanism, in which quorums are generated by several hundred masternodes (LLMQ) that perform a verifiable network-wide measurement/vote of the "first-seen" rule and lock in the first-seen block. Blocks are finalised with a single confirmation, as no further restructuring is permitted. This also mitigates 51 percent mining attacks, as a 51 percent assault would require more than half of the masternode network to be hijacked in order to disable Chainlocks.
Firo's mining algorithm is MTP, which is resistant to ASICs because to memory hardness. To support equitable distribution of its coin, it is switching to FiroPOW, a ProgPOW variation created specifically for GPU mining and even more resistant to ASICs and FPGAs.
