Helium is a decentralized, open wireless network based on a new blockchain for the physical world. The Helium mainnet is a network of nodes that lets low-powered wireless devices to communicate with each other and send data. Helium intends to increase the wireless Internet of Things (IoT) devices' communication capability. In 2013, IoT infrastructure was still in its infancy, but developers sought to add decentralisation to their offering, therefore the official whitepaper referred to it as "The People's Network."
Its primary target audience will be device owners and IoT enthusiasts, with financial incentives providing additional outreach opportunities.

Helium employs a proprietary consensus process known as proof-of-coverage (PoC), which compensates users for helping to mine (validate transactions) and maintain stability.
PoC is based on the HoneyBadger BFT protocol, which was created expressly for node communication in unstable settings.
According to Helium, the most likely attack vector is inbound ports of Hotspots, which affect node operators. To provide users with private key security, the platform's own wallet employs asymmetric keys.
