Moonbeam is a developer-oriented blockchain that strives to provide compatibility with the existing Ethereum developer toolchain and network. While Moonbeam aims to be the EVM compatible parachain within the Polkadot ecosystem, its sister network, Moonriver, launched as a parachain on Kusama in June 2021. Moonbeam and Moonriver have nearly identical underlying technology. Moonriver may receive new features first before they get deployed to Moonbeam. The two share a testnet called Moonrock.

Overview

Moonbeam provides integration and connectivity between Polkadot Parachains as well as with other chains such as Ethereum and Bitcoin via bridges. Through Moonbeam, developers can port their existing Ethereum DApps to Polkadot or easily create new permissionless decentralized applications (dApps) using familiar Ethereum development tools. The tools on Moonbeam ensure that there is minimal change when front-end dApps are moved between chains. By using Moonbeam, Ethereum developers (which is the largest market of existing blockchain developers) will be able to bypass the scalability challenges due to the expense and constraints of the Ethereum network.

Moonbeam is a smart contract blockchain platform built in the Rust programming language using the Substrate framework.Moonbeam uses a hybrid consensus protocol based on Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS), which provides deterministic finality. Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) is also known as Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS).Moonbeam leverages multiple existing Substrate frame pallets to provide key blockchain services and functionality, including core blockchain data structures, peer-to-peer networking, consensus mechanisms, accounts, assets, and balances.The core Moonbeam runtime specifies the state transition function and behavior of the Moonbeam blockchain. The Moonbeam runtime is built using FRAME. It includes several standard pallets as well as several custom ones. The runtime is compiled to a WebAssembly (Wasm) binary as well as a native binary. These compiled versions will be executed in the Polkadot relay chain and Moonbeam node environments.
