Overview
Stacks (previously Blockstack) delivers internet ownership software, which comprises infrastructure and developer tools to support a decentralized computer network and economy (dApps). Its goal is to eliminate the need for centralized cloud service providers and apps that collect and sell user data. Users of the Stacks network can directly own digital assets such as usernames, domain names, and computer programs. Computing is done on the Stacks blockchain at the edges (i.e., client devices), whereas apps on the platform store data separately and only use the blockchain when necessary.

Stacks uses the Bitcoin blockchain as its base layer. Bitcoin is a Proof of Work (PoW)-based blockchain that harnesses the joint efforts of thousands of miners and nodes to safeguard the network against attacks by making subverting the network computationally and economically impossible.
On top of that, Stacks introduces its own consensus process, known as proof-of-transfer (PoX), which is a revolutionary mining method in which users transfer their base currency (BTC) to mine STX, thereby bootstrapping the Stacks blockchain's security with BTC.
Smart contracts developed by Stacks, based on their Clarity programming language, enable the creation, ownership, and trading of new types of digital assets like as tokens and digital collectibles.
