According to Yuga Labs, the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Discord server was hacked on Saturday, and the attacker made off with 200 ETH ($360,000) worth of NFTs.
The project’s community manager, Boris Vagner, had his Discord account hacked. The attacker utilized it to send phishing links on both the main BAYC and its linked metaverse project named Otherside’s Discord channels.
Gordon Goner said on Twitter on Saturday that Discord, a popular chat program among the crypto industry, “isn’t functioning for Web3 groups.” “We need a better platform that prioritizes security,” he continued.
Are Discord Phishing Attacks on the Rise?
While the magnitude of the damage inflicted by this assault is unknown, previous crypto scams serve as a solid warning to NFT owners to be cautious when interacting with third-party platforms like social media and double-check the information provided by others, even if they appear to be trustworthy.
OKHotshot revealed the wallets that contained and sent the freshly hacked NFTs as the inquiry came to a close. In two weeks, this happened twice that BAYC had been hacked. On May 25, a Proof Collective member lost $1.5 million worth of high-value Ethereum-based Moonbirds NFTs during an ongoing fraud.
In May, 70 Discord channels/accounts were targeted, including well-known brands such as RTFKT and OpenSea.
What’s Happening With BAYC?
The BAYC server was previously hacked, with the most recent incident occurring in late April. Unfortunately, hacking is becoming a common issue in the crypto world, and here is the latest example.
Key Highlights:
- There have lately been two official Discord groups connected to BAYC and OtherSide NFT collections.
- The attackers used several phishing URLs to steal almost $260,000.
- In two weeks, BAYC has been hacked twice.
