Hal Finney’s wife, Fran, has announced a fundraising event for those suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Finney urged Bitcoin users to participate in the event by running a half-marathon and sharing their experiences online between January 1 and January 10, 2023, in order to help generate money for the disease. Finney discussed the event on Twitter.

Fran Finney shared the news on Hal Finney’s official Twitter account. She had previously reactivated the account to prevent Twitter from deleting old accounts.

About the event

The purpose of “Running Bitcoin,” a half marathon event that will take place between January 1 and January 10, is to attract as many individuals to participate in running or walking a half marathon distance while donating money for ALS research through Bitcoin donations. The occasion bears the name of Finney’s well-known tweet from more than a decade ago.

The news has already attracted the attention of the Bitcoin community, and other people have expressed their own enthusiastic support for this initiative. One Twitter user wrote, “I have never exercised in my life, but for Hal, I will run!”

Through the event website, runningbitcoin.us, organizers are accepting donations in both Bitcoin and fiat money. A free commemorative t-shirt will be given to contributors who donate at least $100. In addition, a Hal Finney collectible autographed by Fran Finney will be given to the top 25 contributors.

Over $8,600 has been raised for the cause, including $4,023 from Fran Finney. The organizers want to raise a total of $50,000.
