Key Highlights:

  • The identity of the hackers is unclear.
  • News24 appears to have reclaimed control of its Twitter account.
  • Scammers put News24’s 1.4 million followers at Crypto risk.

A recent Crypto scheme targeted the Twitter account of News24, one of India’s top news channels. Hackers exploited company security to post deceptive links for a phony XRP drop, encouraging viewers to click and potentially be conned.

Crypto scammers had previously hijacked India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter profile, as well as accounts of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), and Mann Deshi Mahila Bank.

To make their fraud posts appear real and serious, the hackers included images of Ripple CEO Brad Galinghouse.

While News24 appears to have regained control of its Twitter handle, screenshots of the fraudulent postings that appeared on its page have been posted on the micro-blogging platform by others.

As of present, it is unknown whether any of News24’s followers clicked on the infected links. The channel has not issued any official statements about the incident in the public domain; thus, it is unclear whether the channel has brought the matter to the attention of investigating authorities.

There are currently no posts promoting any crypto airdrops on the TV news channel’s Twitter page.
