The Notorious B.I.G.’s music, film, fashion, and unpublished archives are managed by the Christopher Wallace Estate, which on Tuesday launched a collection of 3,000 Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) that sold out in 10 minutes.
In addition, owners of the newly released NFTs now get the license rights to the audio of a previously unheard B.I.G. freestyle because the digital collectibles were published through the NFT platform Oneof.
The “Sky’s the Limit” NFT Collection, honoring the life and memory of the Notorious B.I.G., is published by the Christopher Wallace Estate.
Holders will be a part of the Sky’s The Limit collective, giving them access to the rights to Biggie’s famous Fulton Street freestyle recording and 3D graphics they may use as their online profile image. With permission from the group and the Christopher Wallace Estate, they can utilize the audio in their songs and publish them to streaming services with a “featuring The Notorious B.I.G.” credit.
“Web3 is a perfect vehicle for this since both NFTs and hip-hop are cultural movements started by young creators who wanted to put out art that wasn’t fully understood or accepted by the mainstream,” Chris Sealy, OneOf’s Creative Director & VP of Programming, explained in an interview. “Biggie broke down creative barriers in his day just like many of the most important NFT pioneers do today, and it’s only right that the greatest rapper of all time would continue to shape culture in his ‘life after death.’”
