The decentralized social networking protocol that powers Mastodon and other decentralized apps that compete with Twitter, ActivityPub, is apparently being developed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, as a distinct text-based content platform. Moneycontrol, an Indian business news website, broke the news first, citing sources.
“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” a Meta spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.
About the new app
A new decentralized app, codenamed P92, is still in development. The software will allow users to sign in using their credentials for Instagram, according to the docs seen by the publication. Those who don’t want to share their data with another Meta app may find this irritating.
According to a Platformer story, Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, would be in charge of the initiative. However, before the software is made available to the public, the corporation has already enlisted the help of the legal department to identify any potential privacy issues.
The project’s decentralized network architecture is its most noteworthy feature. On a decentralized network, individual users are often able to build up their own independent servers and establish server-specific rules for how content is reviewed. However, the business would not go any farther than its remark.
