Shanghai, China, is moving swiftly to include the metaverse in its residents’ daily life. A pilot project to transform 20 different metropolitan areas into “main metaverse application scenarios,” which would use digital technology in various ways, was recently unveiled by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
This technology will be used in various societal sectors, such as commercial operations, education, branding, and entertainment. In addition, the city anticipates that doing this will enable residents to utilize these city facilities’ smarter services. For instance, Ruijin Hospital will set up a VR (virtual reality) facility to examine patient rooms through metaverse representations in the field of healthcare.

At the Shanghai Eye and ENT Hospital, a partner institution of Fudan University, a “metaverse diagnose system” has been established, allowing physicians to employ 3D remote diagnosis tools to assist patients.
According to industry experts, the usage of the metaverse in various industries, including tourism and healthcare, is a burgeoning trend in Chinese cities.
According to Wang Peng, a research fellow at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences and an expert in the digital economy, the development of metaverse technology allows users to benefit from more individualized services.
He also pointed out that the expanding industrial chains based on metaverse technological innovation might lead to creating more jobs in the city.
Other highlights
The Oriental Pearl Tower, a landmark with a height of about half a kilometer, is one of the greatest attractions that will provide metaverse elements. A VR-capable program will let travelers fly above Shanghai’s business district from the broadcasting tower, a popular tourist destination.
The Shanghai Skyscraper’s general manager, Guo Yifeng, indicated that they are hoping this new focus would assist the tower, which was recently rebuilt, will draw in more tourists. He stated, “We hope these new metaverse projects can enrich people’s visiting experience and make our online marketing more accessible and interesting.”
