Overview

Cosmos is a blockchain project directed to enable connection and interaction among blockchains with diverse functionalities. The team working on this project defines Cosmos as an “Internet of blockchains.” Cosmos proclaims to offer scalability, usability, and interoperability, which are essential to attain the broader acceptance of blockchain technology.

Cosmos is a network of independent blockchains in which the mode of communication is IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication), an interoperability protocol developed after TCP/IP for the secure transmission of data and value. The Cosmos Hub is, also recognized as "Gaia," is a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chain with an inherent token, ATOM, which acts as the primary center for monitoring transactions and data between blockchains within the Cosmos network.

Technology

Cosmos is a network linking numerous independent distributed ledgers (e.g., Ethereum, Bitcoin) to attain interoperability across blockchains. Its objective is to "create an Internet of Blockchains", i.e., "a network of blockchains where every member can communicate with each other in a decentralized way".

Cosmos is developed on a set of independent blockchains denoted as zones, which are backed by the Tendermint Core accord mechanism - a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) accord mechanism used to scale public Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains.
Ethermint, an exact clone of Ethereum's smart contract language Solidity, is the first language to be supported on Cosmos.
Use of Native tokens in the ecosystem
The native token of the cosmos is “Atom.” ATOM tokens are earned by a hybrid proof-of-stake method, and they aid in the security of the Cosmos Hub, the project's main blockchain. This cryptocurrency is also used to administer the network.
