The popular term “tank” refers to a sharp decline in the value of an asset and was adopted from the traditional financial markets. As a result, when an asset’s price is declining quickly, it is referred to be “tanking.” The phrase “tank” can also be used to describe an unprofitable sector of the economy or business.
An asset or portfolio is said to be “in the tank” if its financial performance over a longer length of time is considerably dropping in value. This is a widespread usage of the term, particularly in traditional markets.
