The smallest unit from which a user may complete a transaction is called a wei for ether. Wei for ether can be corresponded to what satoshi is for bitcoin.

The wei is named after Wei Dai, who is known for developing the Crypto++ library and for creating “b-money,” the forerunner of bitcoin.
